Marine cargo insurance for perishable and temperature-sensitive goods in Malaysia: why standard cover can fall short, what to ask about, and what to keep for a claim.

Frozen food, fresh produce, dairy, supplements, cosmetics and some medical or lab products all share one problem in transit: they can be ruined without any visible damage to the box. A reefer container that drifts out of range, a delay at a port or a pallet left on a hot apron can write off a whole shipment. This guide explains how [marine cargo insurance in Malaysia](https://www.coverbuddies.com/marine-insurance-malaysia) applies to perishable and temperature-sensitive goods, and what importers and exporters should check before they ship.

## The short answer

Standard cargo cover is built around physical loss or damage from an insured event, such as a fire, a vessel incident or rough handling. Spoilage is different, because goods can deteriorate from time, temperature or a refrigeration fault. Whether your policy responds usually depends on the clause level, whether a temperature-related extension is included, and the exclusions for delay and the natural condition of the goods. Always check the policy wording, because cover differs from one policy to another.

This article is about the extra questions that perishables raise. For who insures under each trade term, see [marine cargo insurance and Incoterms](https://www.coverbuddies.com/en/knowledge-hub/marine-cargo-insurance-and-incoterms-who-insures-the-goods), and for the general introduction, [working with marine insurance](https://www.coverbuddies.com/en/knowledge-hub/working-with-marine-insurance).

## Why perishables are a special case

- **The loss can be invisible.** A container can arrive intact while its contents have thawed or spoiled.
- **Time matters more.** A few days of delay may make no difference to machinery but a big difference to chilled food.
- **Several things can go wrong at once.** Equipment failure, power loss at a terminal, a door left open or incorrect temperature settings can each cause the same result, and each is treated differently by a policy.
- **The goods can be rejected even if they are fine.** Authorities or buyers may refuse a shipment for reasons other than physical damage, and that is rarely a standard insured event.

## Where standard cover can fall short

### Refrigeration or temperature-control breakdown

Many policies exclude loss caused by a failure of refrigeration or temperature-control equipment unless that is specifically added. If you ship chilled or frozen goods, ask whether breakdown of the refrigeration equipment is covered, for how long it must have run, and what proof the insurer expects.

### Delay

Cargo policies commonly exclude loss caused by delay, even when the delay itself comes from an insured event. For goods that spoil with time, this exclusion can matter a great deal. Ask how the wording treats delay and what, if anything, can be added.

### Natural deterioration and inherent vice

Damage that comes from the nature of the goods themselves, such as ordinary ripening or decay, is usually excluded. The line between ordinary deterioration and loss caused by an insured event can be hard to draw, which is why records matter.

### Packing and loading

Loss that results from unsuitable packing, or from how the goods were loaded or stowed, is a common ground for dispute. Carton quality, pallet configuration, airflow around the cargo and pre-cooling all play a part.

### Rejection by authorities or the buyer

A shipment held or refused by an import authority, or rejected by the receiver, is often not covered under a standard policy. Some extensions exist, but they are specific and subject to conditions. Ask before you ship, not after.

## Questions to ask before you buy cover

- Which clause level applies, and does it cover the type of loss I am worried about?
- Is refrigeration or temperature-control failure covered, and under what conditions?
- How is delay treated?
- Does cover include cold storage and handling at ports, transhipment points and warehouses, or only the main carriage?
- What temperature records or reports will you need if there is a claim?
- Are there conditions about pre-shipment inspection, packing or container condition?
- How is the sum insured set, and does it include freight and duty?

## What to do to protect a claim

- **Set and record the temperature.** Keep the container's required setting in writing, and a pre-trip check or pre-cooling record where relevant.
- **Use temperature data loggers** or the carrier's temperature report, and keep the readings for the whole journey.
- **Document the goods before loading.** Take photographs of the condition, packing and loading, and keep the packing list and inspection reports.
- **Check on arrival.** Inspect the container, seals and temperature display, note any problem on the delivery documents and photograph it before the goods are moved.
- **Tell your insurer, broker or agency promptly.** Policies set notice conditions, and perishable goods may need to be inspected quickly.
- **Protect the goods sensibly.** Follow the insurer's instructions on storage and salvage, and keep the damaged goods available for inspection.

## Where cover starts and stops in the cold chain

Perishable shipments often pass through cold stores, consolidation points and port terminals before reaching the final warehouse. Cargo cover is often described as warehouse to warehouse, but the exact start and end points come from the wording. Confirm that the cold storage steps on both ends are included, and what happens if the cargo waits at a terminal longer than planned. For the difference between your own cargo cover and a carrier's responsibility, see [carrier liability vs goods in transit insurance](https://www.coverbuddies.com/en/knowledge-hub/difference-between-carrier-liability-insurance-and-goods-in-transit-insurance).

## Common questions

### Does cargo insurance cover food that spoils in transit?

It depends on the cause and the wording. Spoilage after an insured event may be covered, while natural deterioration and delay are commonly excluded. A temperature-related extension may be needed.

### Is a standard cargo policy enough for frozen goods?

Often not on its own. Check specifically for refrigeration breakdown, delay and storage conditions.

### Does it matter if the seller arranged the insurance?

It can. Under some trade terms the seller must buy only minimum cover, which may not address temperature risks. Ask for the wording before shipment.

### Can I rely on the carrier's liability instead?

A carrier's liability is usually limited and subject to conditions, so it may recover far less than the value of the goods.
