In a recent poll conducted by Cover Buddies on LinkedIn, users were asked about their preferences for employee benefits programs. Surprisingly, more than 80% of the respondents voted for an annual medical checkup allowance. This signifies a growing awareness among Malaysians about regular health checkups and maintaining good health overall. With the increasing costs of private healthcare in the country, it is encouraging to see that Malaysians are recognizing the significance of preventive care.
Notably, some insurance programs in Malaysia have also embraced a holistic approach to health, and some newer (and higher-tier programs) now provide allowances for annual medical checkups. This shift in mindset reflects a positive trend toward prioritizing health maintenance and well-being in the Malaysian workforce.
Surprisingly, mental health benefits came in second place with 14% of the votes. This shift in priorities can be attributed to the ongoing pandemic and many Malaysians' transition to remote work. With longer working hours and limited physical interaction with colleagues, it's no wonder that cases of depression have been on the rise. The need for mental health support and resources has become increasingly apparent, and it's encouraging to see that Malaysians are recognizing the importance of prioritizing their mental well-being alongside their physical health.
Surprisingly, only 5% of users voted for dental care benefits. This statistic sheds light on the often overlooked aspect of dental procedures and their potentially high costs. Unlike medical checkups, dental procedures are typically not covered by insurance programs in Malaysia unless they are the result of an accident. This means that individuals are left to bear the financial burden of dental care on their own, which can be very costly.
However, it is important to recognize the significance of dental health and the impact it can have on overall well-being. Regular dental checkups and treatments are vital for maintaining oral hygiene and preventing more serious dental issues in the long run. While dental care benefits may not have received the same level of attention in the poll, individuals must prioritize their dental health and seek affordable dental care options.
What About Prescription Drug Allowances?
The result for prescription drug allowance came in surprisingly low in this poll. This benefit is very popular among larger companies with long employee tenure (10 years and above. Think Malaysian GLCs). However, it is possible that the respondents in this particular poll were of a younger demographic. It is important to note that prescription drug coverage is crucial in providing employees with access to necessary medications and ensuring their well-being. As healthcare costs continue to rise, it becomes increasingly important for employers to consider the inclusion of prescription drug allowances in their employee benefits programs.
Also note that this poll was conducted on LinkedIn, which typically consists of privately held companies. Hence, there is a lower response rate regarding this benefit.
