Group Medical Insurance for Businesses in Malaysia

A single policy covering your employees, and in some cases their dependents, under one plan. Also known as a Group Health & Surgical Program (GHS), it gives your team cashless hospital admission and real health cover without each person needing their own policy.

    What it covers

Group medical insurance covers your employees, and in some cases their dependents, under a single policy. It's also known as a Group Health & Surgical Program (GHS), Group Medical Insurance, or Group Insurance. Most plans are modular, built from a mix of the following benefits:

    • Hospitalisation: daily room and board, typically RM100–RM500 a night, plus an annual surgical benefit that can range from RM20,000 to RM200,000.
    • Death benefit: sometimes called a Life Insured Amount.
    • Critical illness: a lump-sum payout if a critical illness occurs.
    • Personal accident (PA): a payout by percentage of the insured value.
    • Hospitalisation income: a daily payout, typically RM50–RM100 a day, to help cover costs the main plan doesn't.

    Who typically needs it

Any business wanting to offer real health cover to its team. Group plans typically require a minimum of 4–6 employees to get started. If your headcount is below that, a standalone medical card can bridge the gap until you reach the minimum.

    Why it matters

    • Cashless admission: works well for staff who need hospital care without paying upfront.
    • Wide hospital networks: most plans offer a panel of hospitals to choose from.
    • Relatively affordable: for the facilities provided, group rates are generally cheaper than individual policies.
    • Can extend to outpatient care: some plans cover clinic and GP visits too.

    Common questions

What's the minimum number of employees?

Most group plans need a minimum of 4–6 employees. Below that, a standalone medical card is the usual stopgap.

Does this cover my employees' families?

Some plans can be extended to cover dependents; this depends on the plan chosen.

Is this the same as 'employee benefits'?

Group medical insurance is often one part of a wider employee benefits program, which can extend further.
